JAKARTA - Minister of Home Affairs (Mendagri) Tito Karnavian said the term of office of the governor is only valid for a maximum of one year. Later, the office can be extended or replaced by someone else.

"According to the law, the Acting position lasts or is carried out for a maximum of one year and the law states that it can be extended by the same person or a different person," said Minister of Home Affairs Tito during the inauguration ceremony of the Acting Governor at the Ministry of Home Affairs Office, Jalan Medan Merdeka Utara. , Thursday, May 12.

It's just that the extension or replacement of this Pj must be with an evaluation mechanism. So, later on, officials are obliged to submit accountability reports to President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) through the Ministry of Home Affairs.

"An evaluation mechanism will be carried out in accordance with the law and government regulations. Officials are obliged to submit a three-monthly duty accountability report to the President through the Minister of Home Affairs," Tito explained.

"This is for the context of the governor. The regent, the mayor to the Minister of Home Affairs through the governor," he added.

Tito said that the extension of the term of office for one year was indeed in accordance with the applicable law. Of course, they will be judged by their performance.

"Whether the performance is good or not, within one year it can be extended by the same person or different people. It depends on their performance," he said.

As previously reported, there are 272 regional heads in Indonesia whose terms of office will expire in the near future. Later, they will be replaced by officials until the Regional Head Election (Pilkada) which will be held in 2024.

Paulus Waterpauw who now serves as Deputy for Management of Potential Management of BNPP Border Areas at the Ministry of Home Affairs as Acting Governor of West Papua.
