Bantul Regent Encourages Piyungan TPST Management To Have No Impact On Residents

BANTUL - Bantul Regent Abdul Halim Muslih has encouraged efforts to manage waste at the Piyungan Integrated Waste Disposal Site (TPST) by the Yogyakarta Special Region government so that it has minimal impact on the surrounding community.

"Indeed, the Piyungan TPST must be properly managed, meaning that it has minimal impact on the community," said Halim, responding to the waste issue caused by the closure of the Piyungan TPST, reported by Antara, Wednesday, May 11.

He said that the Piyungan TPST, which is under the authority of the DIY Regional Government, of course, is the DIY Regional Government, because the Piyungan TPST is a regional final disposal site that accommodates waste from residents of Sleman, Yogyakarta and Bantul.

"There is minimal impact, for example, leachate (liquid produced from exposure to rainwater in landfills) should not spread to people's fields, and secondly, affected communities around the TPST must receive compensation, of course that is the authority of the DIY local government," he said.

It was previously reported that access to the Piyungan TPST was closed by the Banyakan community, Sitimulyo Village, Piyungan, on May 9, 2022, and in its development after an audience with the Governor of DIY on Wednesday, the DIY Regional Government and the community agreed to reopen it on Thursday (12/5).

The Bantul Regent also hopes and encourages the Sleman Regency Government to make its own TPST, because from Sleman and Yogyakarta City, the volume of waste deposited into regional TPAs tends to increase, while those from Bantul tend to decrease, because they continue to promote waste sorting from the source.

"So we encourage Sleman Regency to make its own TPST, because Sleman is wider than Bantul, and Bantul has been a regional waste and waste disposal site. Not only garbage, the waste brought to the Pendowoharjo IPAL Bantul is also from the city," he said.

He said if Sleman Regency made its own TPST and Bantul continued to reduce the volume of waste with the concept of solving the waste problem in the village, then the Piyungan TPST was only intended to accommodate garbage from the city of Yogyakarta.

"Even so, we demand that the City of Yogyakarta do the sorting. If the city is successful in sorting, then automatically the TPST is no longer needed, because since ancient times until now the problem of waste in this TPST continues to exist," he said.
