JAKARTA - Police launched an investigation after the discovery of 50 kilograms of cocaine worth Rp202 billion, near a fainted diver wearing elite diving equipment.
A man wearing high-end diving equipment was found lying unconscious near the Hunter River in Newcastle, about 170 km (106 miles) north of Sydney, on Monday, New South Wales police said.
Despite being treated by paramedics, the unidentified man died at the scene. Several packages, which contained a white powder believed to be cocaine, lay nearby.
"We are trying to identify whether the two incidents are related. It is possible, but we are open-minded about the options that are in front of us," New South Wales Police Detective Inspector Robert Critchlow told reporters.
Investigators searched an overseas registered vessel that docked near the discovery site on Tuesday, speaking to the crew, Critchlow said. Two small boats were reportedly spotted near the vessel on Sunday evening and authorities are asking the public for help identifying them.
"Searchs of the surrounding waters by divers will resume on Tuesday, assisted by officers from the Australian Border Force," police said.
