Labor Wants To Use JIS For May Day Action, Gerindra Disagrees

JAKARTA - Member of the Gerindra faction of the DKI Jakarta DPRD, Syarif, admitted that he did not agree if the Jakarta International Stadium (JIS) was used by labor groups to carry out the May Day or Labor Day action.

"If there's a demonstration, you can't. It's not allowed. I don't think the place is at JIS. What are the targets there? There aren't any," Syarif said when contacted, Friday, April 22.

Syarif said that at this time JIS had just held a soft launch. In a sense, the operation of the international standard stadium can not be run perfectly. Given, there are still minor repairs and cleaning that needs to be done on the existing facilities.

"We both know that JIS is not 100 percent clean. There are still traces of material, paint, dust. That's not possible," said Syarif.

Moreover, Syarif views that the DKI Provincial Government and JIS managers will be in trouble in managing traffic and maintaining security if tens of thousands of workers at one time crowded the area.

"Friends of workers also have to coordinate with the management, security, and the DKI Provincial Government. Can you regulate traffic engineering with a capacity of, for example, 85 thousand people? I don't think you can," he said.

For information, labor groups from 4 trade union confederations, 60 national-level trade union federations, and several other elements of society will hold a May Day commemoration on May 14, 2022.

The action, which will be led by the President of the Confederation of Indonesian Trade Unions (KSPI) Said Iqbal, is said to be attended by 100,000 workers throughout the Greater Jakarta area in the Indonesian House of Representatives. After that, a declaration of the workers' struggle was made by the Labor Party and the Indonesian labor movement at the Jakarta International Stadium (JIS) or Istora Senayan.
