JAKARTA - Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo proposed Pocut Meurah Intan, one of the independence figures from Aceh, to become a national hero. Ganjar's wish also received support from the Governor of Aceh, Nova Iriansyah.

Governor Nova appreciated Ganjar Pranowo's attention. Ganjar's proposal was conveyed during a pilgrimage to Pocut's grave on Heroes' Day last year. Pocut is known as an Aceh fighter who was exiled by the Dutch to Blora, Central Java.

Pocut also spent the end of his life and was buried in Blora. This is what makes Pocut's figure give an emotional impression to Ganjar Pranowo, the Governor of Central Java.

"Pocut, a national hero candidate, thank you Pak Ganjar for proposing our fighters," Nova said in a written statement, Monday, April 11.

When welcoming Ganjar Pranowo's visit to his official residence, Nova revealed that he had also recently visited Blora to visit Aceh students studying at the Blora Oil and Gas Academy. During his visit, Nova also made a pilgrimage to Pocut's grave.

"I met the residents and their heirs there, they warned me not to move the tomb to Aceh. I said no, we actually planned in the APBD to upgrade his tomb to be better," said Nova.

Nova also thanked Ganjar for paying attention to this Acehnese hero.

"I thank the Central Java Provincial Government for proposing Pocut Meurah Intan to be a National Hero," he said.

Meanwhile, Ganjar revealed that the proposal for Pocut as a national hero began with the Youth Pledge ceremony on October 28, 2021 at the Aceh Student Dormitory.

"Incidentally, the name of the dormitory is Pocut Meurah Intan, from there we found out that her grave was in Blora, we finally visited and cleaned the tomb and the idea of a national hero was born," explained Ganjar.

Ganjar thinks that Pocut deserves to be a national hero, given the amount of dedication and sacrifice he has for Mother Earth.

"Even though he was exiled in Blora, Pocut's spirit actually inspired and ignited the spirit of the fighters in Central Java," he concluded.
