JAKARTA - Thousands of students from the Indonesian BEM Alliance throughout South Sumatra (South Sulawesi) held a demonstration against the increase in fuel prices and the president for three terms in front of the South Sumatra Provincial DPRD office on Thursday afternoon, April 7.

The Palembang Polrestabes spread barbed wire on the Jalan POM IX section in Lorok Pakjo Village, Ilir Barat I District right in front of the South Sumatra DPRD office at 14.00 WIB.

"That's why the road section of the DPRD office is blocked or completely closed. We will temporarily divert traffic there to another road," said Head of the Palembang Polrestabes Traffic Unit, Kompol Rendy S. Aditama, in Palembang, Thursday, April 7, according to Antara.

The traffic diversion was targeted to a number of locations, starting from the Radial Road to Jalan Samsat Baru or Jalan Captain A Rivai, Jalan Jendral Sudirman Simpang RSK Charitas to Jalan Radial, as well as Jalan Samsat Baru or Jalan Captain A Rivai.

"The route from Samsat Baru Intersection or Jalan Captain A. Rivai leading to the South Sumatra DPRD intersection is completely closed. The route from Jalan Force 45 is directed to Jalan Jendral Sudirman, RSK Charitas Intersection," he said.

Meanwhile, based on observations at the location, mass demonstrations seemed to crowd along the road in front of the South Sumatra DPRD office carrying banners, posters bearing their demands, and three pick-up cars containing loudspeakers.

"We came peacefully. We asked to meet directly with the chairman of the South Sumatra DPRD directly, and then convey this aspiration to the central government so that it can be heard," said one student wearing a yellow alma mater jacket.

The police also seemed to be closely guarding the course of the demonstration, deploying more than 100 personnel equipped with personal safety equipment. The demonstration so far has been observed to be running in an orderly manner.
