JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Supadio Pontianak detected as many as 408 hotspots spread across several areas in West Kalimantan (Kalbar) Province.

"Currently, an increase in the number of hotspots in West Kalimantan has been detected, from 112 hotspots in the previous week to 408," said Head of BMKG Supadio Pontianak, Nanang Buchori, quoted by Antara, Sunday, April 3.

The distribution of hotspots is based on LAPAN data from April 2 at 07.00 WIB to April 3, 2022 at 07.00 WIB.

Judging from LAPAN data, out of 14 districts/cities in West Kalimantan, only three areas have zero hotspots, namely in Sanggau, Sintang and Sekadau districts. The most hotspots are in Mempawah Regency, which is as many as 220 hotspots.

The second most hotspots in Kubu Raya Regency were 83 hotspots; then followed by the City of Pontianak as many as 51 hotspots; Ketapang Regency as many as 28 hotspots; Bengkayang and Melawi have six hotspots each; The hedgehog five points of fire; Singkawang four hotspots; Kapuas Hulu three hotspots; Sambas and North Kayong Regencies each have one hotspot.

He explained that from a climatic point of view, the trigger for the hotspots in West Kalimantan was the occurrence of long periods of rain and maximum sunshine.

According to him, maximum sunlight and lack of cloud cover are the causes of hot and dry weather conditions. If it occurs for a long period of time, it will be vulnerable to forest and land fires, especially on peatlands in West Kalimantan.

"West Kalimantan is sensitive to rain breaks. Currently, West Kalimantan's coastal areas have been observed to have rain breaks of more than 10 days, causing hotspots to appear," he said.
