JAKARTA - A four-legged yellow and black robot has been summoned to inspect the ancient ruins of Pompeii and help improve management of one of Italy's most famous archaeological sites.

The robot, called Spot, designed by US-based Boston Dynamics, is part of a broader project using technology to help monitor work on the Pompeii site and make it more secure, the organization that runs the site said in a statement.

The aim is "to increase existing (ruin) monitoring and knowledge, of the progress of work in areas under restoration or restoration, and therefore to manage the safety of the site, as well as of the workers," he said.

Later, Spot robots will also be sent to underground tunnels dug by thieves, to enter the ancient city and steal historical artifacts.

"We wanted to test these robots in the underground tunnels of clandestine excavators we found in the area," said the site's director general, Gabriel Zuchtriegel.

He added that it is very important to monitor the safety conditions in the tunnel.

To note, in addition to the four-legged robot Spot, the ancient site of Pompeii will also have a flying laser scanner that will perform 3D scans of the wreckage.
