Jokowi: Indonesia Is Not Benefiting From The Impact Of Climate Change

JAKARTA - Climate change with global warming is a problem for all countries in the world. However, President Joko Widodo said that Indonesia was more disadvantaged by this phenomenon.

He conveyed this at the peak of the commemoration of the 72nd World Meteorological Day which was held by the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

"Currently, we are dealing with the phenomenon of climate change which is becoming increasingly real. There is an increase in air temperature, sea level temperature is getting warmer. There is a rate of sea level rise that endangers coastal areas and small islands. Weather and extreme climates will also occur more frequently. and risky. As an agrarian and archipelagic country, Indonesia is increasingly disadvantaged from the impact of climate change," said Jokowi as seen on the BMKG Info Youtube channel, Wednesday, March 30.

The problem that has the potential to occur in Indonesia from climate change, said Jokowi, is that the frequency, intensity, and duration of geohydrometeorological disasters will increase.

Then, the adaptability of plants and crop productivity decreases, so this threatens food security in Indonesia.

Therefore, Jokowi emphasized several things. First, he asked all ranks to pay serious attention to the weather and climate change information provided by the BMKG and other relevant agencies.

"Formulate climate change mitigation and adaptation policies quickly, and prepare better handling to reduce the negative impacts of climate change," said Jokowi.

Second, Jokowi requested the development of an early warning system by providing data and information on meteorology, climatology, and geophysics quickly and accurately. This is urgently needed to develop reliable and measurable mitigation.

Third, the former Governor of DKI Jakarta asked for a sustainable system of education, literacy, and disaster advocacy. Then, the capacity and resilience of climate change adaptation and mitigation must also continue to be improved so that the community is able to respond quickly to potential disaster risks.

"Farmers and fishermen as vulnerable groups in the impact of climate change must be given an understanding. We increase their knowledge so that they have the ability to adapt to climate change, can still work productively and safely to maintain our food security," explained Jokowi.

Fifth, Jokowi asked the BMKG to strengthen collaboration with related parties such as ministries and other institutions in adapting and mitigating the impacts of climate change.

Finally, Jokowi reminded that Indonesia will be the host of the 7th Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) from 23 to 28 May. Jokowi asked for this implementation to be optimized.

"I hope we can make the best use of this forum to show the world that our country is one of the centers of knowledge regarding disaster risk reduction, including geohydrometeorological multi-disaster mitigation," he added.
