JAKARTA - A German bakery is selling 'peace doughnuts' to support Ukraine in a sweet way, with cakes decorated in Ukraine's national colours, to raise money for children forced to flee after the Russian invasion.

In the midst of the Russian invasion of Ukraine that resulted in heavy casualties, with millions of people displaced by the ensuing war, the Huck bakery in Frankfurt, Germany began offering peace doughnuts.

Covered in blue and yellow frosting, the donuts sell for one euro, or around Rp. 15,877 per piece. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of these donuts will be donated to Ukrainian refugee children seeking refuge in Frankfurt.

"We thought we had to do something very fast, not bureaucratic," said bakery co-owner Tanja Huck.

"We decided to make an add-on product that wasn't too expensive, so it was affordable for everyone and you could bring lots of people to the office," adds Huck.

The campaign appears to be working with 600 pieces sold as of Thursday morning at 10 bakery branches and 300 pre-orders for Friday.

"Yesterday we just posted it briefly on social media, then the first order came right in, and by eight this morning most of the branches were sold out," says Huck.

"We didn't expect it to be so well received," he added.

Meanwhile, Therese Rinschen-Piechocinski, a Polish woman living in Frankfurt, bought a solidarity cake and was touched by the campaign.

"If they serve a purpose, if they can help really poor people who are also fighting for us, then I'm ready, I've made a donation," Rinschen-Piechocinski said.

It is known, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a special military operation in Ukraine on February 24 last, with the aim of demilitarization and denazification, not to occupy territory and not to target civilians.

Meanwhile, Ukraine and Western countries consider this unreasonable, condemning the actions taken followed by the imposition of various sanctions against Russia. The move was also met with sanctions by Moscow.
