AMBON - The Maluku Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BSKDA) plans to release 32 parrots confiscated by regional police to the Mount Masbait Nature Reserve in the eastern part of Buru Island.
"Maybe next week, March 30, they will be released into their natural habitat on Buru Island, on Mount Masbait," said Head of the Maluku BKSDA Danny Hendry Pattipeilohy in Ambon City as quoted by Antara, Wednesday, March 23.
The 32 Maluku parrots confiscated by police officers are currently placed in the Maluku BKSDA transit cage in Passo.
The parrots will undergo a quarantine and rehabilitation process as well as health checks before being released into their natural habitat.
"The quarantine and rehabilitation process as well as health checks were carried out because according to the officer's observations there were several of these birds who were sick, with many injured wings, as a result of the process of catching and transporting them on the ship," said Danny.
Previously, the Maluku Regional Police on March 16, 2022 confiscated 32 Maluku parrots on the Elizabeth II Ship which was docked at the Slamet Riadi Harbor in Ambon.
On March 17, 2022, the police handed over the 32 parrots from South Buru to the Maluku BKSDA. Apart from confiscating the parrot, the police also secured and examined the owner of the animal.
