JAKARTA - DKI Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan adds one lane for bicycles along Jalan Thamrin-Jalan Jenderal Sudirman every Saturday-Sunday or national holidays.

"Please use it for cycling with friends and family," said Anies through the Instagram account @aniesbaswedan quoted by Antara, Saturday, March 19.

The bicycle lane, which is called the "pop up bike lane", is enforced on Saturdays or national holidays at 05.30 - 08.30 WIB and Sunday 05.30 - 09.00 WIB.

The bicycle lane uses part of the traffic lane in addition to the permanent lane.

"Keep maintaining health protocols and obeying traffic signs, and respecting other road users," he said.

Previously, Anies targeted 170 kilometers of bicycle lanes in the capital city by the end of 2021.

As of June 2021, the total bicycle lanes in DKI Jakarta reach 63 kilometers, one of the most famous of which is the permanent bicycle lane along Jalan Thamrin-Sudirman in Central Jakarta-South Jakarta.

Meanwhile, the DKI Jakarta Transportation Agency (Dishub) targets to build a bicycle lane with a length of about 190 kilometers by 2022.

"This is included in the RPJMD (Regional Medium-Term Development Plan) as well as regional strategic activities," said Head of the DKI Transportation Agency, Syafrin Liputo, after a meeting with Commission B at the DKI DPRD Building, Jakarta, Thursday (20/1).

According to him, the addition of the route is to accommodate the high interest of people who switch to using bicycles, either for sports or transportation to work.

Syafrin revealed that in 2019 there was an increase of up to 1,000 percent of bicycle users in Jakarta.
