Dead Leatherback Turtle Hit By Ship In Ambon Harbor

AMBON - The leatherback turtle was found dead by Port Officer Yos Sudarso Ambon on the Dobonsolo ship, in the Yos Sudarso Harbor area, when the ship was about to dock.

"The leatherback turtle has abrasions on the left front fin, left hind fin, and left abdomen," said the Fisheries Supervisor for the Ambon Marine and Fisheries Resources Monitoring Station (PSDKP), Ahmad Yani Y. The death of the leatherback turtle was caused by being hit by the Dobonsolo Ship.

"The leatherback turtle carcass was brought to the Maluku BKSDA Office for extermination by way of burial," he said. The leatherback turtle is one of the protected animals in Indonesia since 1978 with the issuance of the Decree of the Minister of Agriculture No. 327/Kpts/Um/5/1978 Protection for leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea).

Yani said that currently a team from Ambon PSDKP Station, Sorong Coastal and Marine Resources Management Workshop (LPSPL), Maluku Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA), and the Marine and Fisheries Service (DKP) were collecting data on the leatherback turtle.

This turtle is male with a length of 180 cm, carapace length 133 cm, head length 31 cm, head height 11 cm, head width 13 cm.

It was also recorded that the carapace width was 58 cm, the front fin length was 80 cm, the front fin width was 20 cm, the hind fin length was 34 cm, the rear fin width was 16 cm, and the body height was 35 cm.
