SERANG - Class IIA Penitentiary (Lapas) Serang, Banten thwarted an attempt to smuggle drugs suspected of having methamphetamine in food into the prison.

Head of the Class IIA Serang Prison, Heri Kusrita, said that the suspected shabu would be smuggled into the prison by inserting corn stalks in vegetable tamarind.

Heri said that the incident began with the suspicion of the food/goods storage service officer regarding the food brought by one of the prison visitors.

"The goods/food inspection service officer immediately checked the deposited item. After careful inspection, it was found that two small packets of suspected methamphetamine were smuggled into two pieces of corn in sour vegetable food," said Heri as quoted by Antara, Saturday, March 19.

He said the service officer immediately reported the findings to the Head of the Raja Muhammad Ismael N Prison Security Unit and the Head of the Prison who immediately coordinated with the Head of the Correctional Division of the Banten Kemenkumham Regional Office and the Serang City Police Narcotics Satres for follow up.

"Indeed, when the food was checked, the person who sent the food was nervous. He almost fainted," said Heri.

Heri admitted that the attempt to smuggle methamphetamine into prisons with the mode of inserting it into corn stalks is a new mode of drug smuggling efforts into prisons.

"That's why we are very careful in checking every visitor. We provide an X Ray detection tool," said Heri.

Head of the Penitentiary Division of the Banten Ministry of Law and Human Rights Regional Office, Masjuno, emphasized that his party is serious about fighting drugs, especially in prisons and detention centers in the Banten area.

Anyone proven to be involved, whether officers, inmates or visitors, will definitely be dealt with strictly in accordance with applicable regulations," said Masjuno when visiting Serang Prison regarding the findings.
