MAKASSAR - Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto said that the digital economy is one of the sectors that experienced significant growth during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Indonesia has a population of productive age reaching more than 191 million people and most of them are Generation Z. By 2030, Indonesia is estimated to need 9 million digital talents.

During the pandemic there were several sectors that experienced an increase in digitalization, namely in the fields of education (edutech) and health (healthtech).

“The high-quality young generation will have an important role in Indonesia's economic growth in the Society 5.0 era. Digital skills development is estimated to contribute IDR 4,434 trillion to Indonesia's GDP in 2030, equivalent to 16 percent of GDP. This great opportunity for Indonesia's digital economy must be used for mutual prosperity," said Coordinating Minister Airlangga in his remarks at the General Lecture on Acceleration of Economic Recovery and Transformation through Digital Technology Support held at Hasanuddin University Makassar, Saturday, March 12.

Airlangga added that Indonesia's digital economy is currently the highest in ASEAN, with a value of US$70 billion or controlling 40 percent of the share of ASEAN's digital economy.

This value is estimated to continue to grow to reach 146 billion US dollars by 2025. One of the emerging sectors that appear to fill Indonesia's digital economy landscape is the edutech sector, which currently has active users with a significant growth of 200 percent in 2020.

“The government continues to encourage the development of digital talent through various programs such as the National Digital Literacy Movement, Digital Talent Scholarship, and the Digital Leadership Academy. In this digital era, Indonesia's young generation must be able to take advantage of their digital talents, so that they do not only act as job seekers, but can also become job creators," said Coordinating Minister Airlangga.
