JAKARTA - The Y-Publica Survey Institute released as many as 81.5 percent of the total respondents wanting the 2024 Simultaneous General Election (Pemilu) to remain on the schedule determined on February 14, 2024.

"More than 80 percent of the public rejects the postponement of the election and wants it to be held in 2024," said Y-Publica Executive Director Rudi Hartono in a written statement quoted by Antara, Thursday, March 10.

He said that the proposal to postpone the 2024 Simultaneous Election was actually not only made by a number of politicians.

Previously, according to him, Investment Minister Bahlil Lahaladia said there were aspirations from businessmen who hoped that the 2024 Simultaneous Elections would be postponed for the sake of national economic recovery after the COVID-19 pandemic.

"The limitation of the presidential term of office to a maximum of two terms is a reform mandate. After the amendment, the constitution clearly regulates that the process of transition of power runs democratically," explained Rudi.

As a result, democracy in Indonesia is running more mature. The 6th President of the Republic of Indonesia Susilo Bambang Yudohoyono (SBY) complied with the constitution after serving for two terms, which was later replaced by President Jokowi, who is now also entering his second term, he said.

Therefore, whatever the people choose must be carried out within the corridors of democracy, including constitutional amendments.

In the survey results, as many as 12.9 percent of all respondents did not mind changing the schedule for the 2024 Simultaneous Elections, while the remaining 5.6 percent said they did not know or did not answer.

The Y-Publica survey was conducted from February 24 to March 4, 2022, involving 1,200 respondents who were selected by multistage random sampling.

The survey was conducted through face-to-face interviews, with a margin of error of around 2.89 percent and a confidence level of 95 percent.
