DENPASAR - Head of the Technical Implementation Unit of the Indonesian Migrant Workers Protection Agency (BP2MI) Denpasar, Wiam Satriawan, said that since early 2022 there had been no application for the placement of Indonesian migrant workers (PMI) to Ukraine or Russia, which are currently at war.

"We are prohibited from placing PMIs in conflict countries, they will be closed. If the countries are in conflict first, we will not send them, if there are conflicts, we will return Indonesian citizens," he said in Denpasar City, Bali, quoted by Antara, Tuesday, March 8.

Wiam said that the placement of workers was carried out taking into account the situation and conditions of the destination country.

Prospective workers will not be placed in countries that are in conflict and workers who are in countries experiencing conflict will be repatriated.

"It is the state's obligation to protect every citizen. As I said, it is impossible for a conflict country to be directed there, but if there is a conflict in the placement country, it is the state's obligation to save its citizens," said Wiam.

BP2MI Denpasar has facilitated the repatriation of 28 Indonesians working in Ukraine and is waiting for directions from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to assist in the repatriation of 178 Indonesian workers from Russia.
