JAKARTA - We all know eating more plants is good for us and the planet, but some say the benefits of the vegan diet extend to our love lives too. Who doesn't want better circulation and stamina, for a more enjoyable night for all involved?
A survey in 2020 found that around 84 percent of vegetarians reported satisfaction with their sex life, compared to just 59 percent of meat eaters. But most importantly, 95 percent of vegan participants said they were satisfied.
So, why can vegans have better sex?
Red meat can be a heavy meal, often leaving you feeling sluggish and sleepy afterward, which is not the sexiest mood. Vegetables don't make you bloated or tired in the same way. In fact, research shows there is a link between the B vitamins, which are found in spinach, sprouts and oranges, and serotonin production. This is one of those chemicals in your brain that makes you happy.

"The Mediterranean diet has long been known to support heart health, but research also shows these benefits can extend to sexual health, reducing the risk of erectile dysfunction and maintaining sexual function," explains London-based nutritionist Lily Soutter, who works with Future Livestock. "So, by eating less meat, fish and dairy products in moderation, in small amounts of red wine, and emphasizing plant-based foods, it can all show in the bedroom."
She adds, if you're worried about toasted beans on toast, opt for green beans, rice or quinoa, which are less likely to bloat you during those intimate moments.
"What's more, red meat and processed meat appear to have the greatest effect on the environment of any food type. Changing our diet to include more plant-based protein could even help foster a more environmentally friendly diet," explains Soutter.

Another vegan living in Northern England explained in more detail for us.
"I've been vegan for about 10 years and it's pretty clear how much a vegan diet has improved my sexual performance. I have stronger erections, more stamina, faster refractory periods and can perform three to four times a night/session ," he explained to us.
For anyone unsure, the refractory period is the time between orgasm and when you feel ready to be sexually aroused again.
"When I was on a meat-based diet, I would feel sluggish and end up gaining unnecessary weight. Regarding sex, it was satisfying, but my refractory period was longer, my erections weren't as strong as they are now and after having sex twice a night, I would I feel like my mind wants more, but my body will say enough."
But, what about athletic ability and how you feel about your body, is that also a factor? An east Londoner has his say.
"On a personal level I feel leaner, fitter and more energetic since becoming vegan, which definitely helps when it comes to love."
"I think vegans are more active and consequently more passionate about sex. I've noticed that vegans often have a greater sex drive and are more likely to try new things, I wonder if this is because they are often made to try new things. new thing being vegan too?"
When it comes to having a greater sex drive, this is another point that scientific research can support. Going vegan can increase levels of serotonin, which basically makes you more aroused. Experts have also linked serotonin levels to levels of oxytocin, the 'love hormone' that creates stronger feelings of intimacy and affection.
A recent study by the health food chain Holland & Barrett showed that 35 per cent of Londoners on a vegan diet experienced an increase in libido.
Meanwhile, sex and relationship expert Annabelle Knight agrees, adding that being vegan can even affect the way we feel and smell.
"Switching to a plant-based diet can make you smell and feel better. A 2006 study on body odor and diet found that people who avoided animal products smelled 'significantly' better than those who didn't, and, on a sexy note for whoever has a penis, your semen will taste a lot better too."
"There is evidence to suggest that men with diets rich in fresh fruit and vegetables have sweeter sperm. The chlorophyll in foods like celery and parsley, for example, makes them good choices. On the other hand, red meat is known to make semen taste salty."
