Heavy Rain, Six Districts In North Aceh Flooded

JAKARTA - Due to heavy rains and strong winds, six sub-districts in North Aceh Regency, Aceh Province, were submerged by overflowing river water.

"The water hasn't receded. Refugees are still being collected, and there are no reports of casualties," said the Head of BPBA through the Data and Information Center (Pusdatin), quoted from Antara, Sunday, February 27.

Ilyas explained that the flooding began on Sunday, February 27 at around 16.30 WIB. The overflow flood was triggered by heavy rains in North Aceh and Bener Merah areas since Saturday, February 26, at around 23.10 WIB.

As a result, he said, the water discharge of the Krueng (river) Kereuto and Krueng Pirak overflowed to submerge the road and flowed into the residential areas of the river basin.

"Six sub-districts that were submerged include Matangkuli, Pirak Timu, Lhoksukon, Cot Girek, Tanah Luas and Stepan sub-districts," said Ilyas.

Ilyas also added that there were nine submerged gampongs or villages in Pirak Timu Subdistrict, then 13 gampongs (villages) in Matangkuli, two gampongs in Lhoksukon, one gampong in Tanah Luas, one gampong in Stepan and Cot Girek while data collection was being done.

Data from Pusdatin BPBA states that in Matangkuli District the water level starts from 10-50 centimeters. Temporary data on the affected residents are 2,669 people in 743 families (KK).

"Meanwhile, the affected victims in other sub-districts are still being collected," said Ilyas.

The North Aceh BPBD continues to monitor the location of the flood incident and collect data on the affected victims.

He also appealed to the public to be aware of the potential for water debit that continues to increase.
