Observer Says Postponement Of 2024 Election Defects Indonesian Democracy, Muhaimin Is Considered To Have To Learn And Not Confuse The Public

JAKARTA - Political observer who is also the Director of Political and Public Policy Studies (P3S), Jerry Massie, is of the opinion that delaying the 2024 General Election will make Indonesia's democracy flawed.

"This is the mandate of the 1945 Constitution, for me this premature proposal is difficult to carry out and implement. There is no institution that can stop it (postponing the election)," said Jerry, quoted from Antara, Saturday, February 26.

According to him, the proponent of postponing the election, namely PKB Chairman Muhaimin Iskandar, must study first and not make statements that confuse the public.

"It is possible for a person to be in office but it is unconstitutional. The one who can do that according to the law is the MPR RI," he said.

Moreover, he continued, the election stage had already started when Commission II of the DPR chose the KPU/Bawaslu commissioners.

In addition, he said, the government and the DPR have agreed on the date and implementation of the election. It would be unconstitutional if it was pushed back, said Jerry.

"So there is no political party or other institution that can cancel it, because it is dangerous if we want to ratify or amend the Constitution," he said.

So far, PDIP, Gerindra and NasDem have refused other than PKS and Democrats. In order to maintain the stability of the nation's security, the elections will continue to be carried out according to the decisions that have been made.

"In this context, there is no need for arguments and excuses to postpone the election. Currently, there is no norm that allows the president or vice president to extend their term of office," said Jerry. and Law Number 10 of 2016. It is stated in the law that it is mandated that in 2024 elections will be held simultaneously in one year, namely presidential elections, legislative elections, and regional head elections.

"Don't let personal or group desires and ambitions make us forget where we stand and which country we live in? What is our country's system, what are the rules and laws," he said. The 2024 elections are based on existing laws, namely Law Number 10 of 2016 and Law Number 7 of 2017. The Nation (PKB) Muhaimin Iskandar proposed postponing the 2024 General Election on the grounds of maintaining the momentum of economic recovery due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
