CILEGON – The Banten Police Mobile Brigade Gegana Team together with the Cilegon Police Chief AKBP Sigit Haryono checked the location of the explosion that occurred at PT Mitsubishi Chemical Indonesia (MCCI), Wednesday, February 23, afternoon.
"After the explosion, we went straight to PT MCCI Cilegon to ascertain the situation on the ground," said Sigit Haryono, through a statement received, Wednesday, February 23, evening.
Sigit said the big explosion that occurred at around 04.00 WIB came from one of the broken pipes in the Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) 1, or production section. The pipe, said Sigit, contains plastic powder mixed with water and oil which is the basic material for making clothes threads.
"We made sure together with the company management and the Gegana Satbrimob Polda Banten for the safety of employees and then maintaining the status quo at this factory, after that cleaning the chemical liquids which smell strong but are not dangerous," said Sigit Haryono.
Sigit conveyed that PT MCCI Cilegon had coordinated with PT Pertamina Gerem due to the impact of the explosion.
"The result of coordination is that PT MCCI Cilegon will take full responsibility for the incident and actively coordinate with PT Pertamina Gerem for the impact of this incident on the environment," explained Sigit.
However, the Cilegon Police are still investigating the explosion that occurred.
"We also sent from the Banten Police's Gegana Detachment Team, the KBR (Biological and Radioactive Chemistry) unit. The purpose is to conduct an examination and analyze whether the existing liquid will meet with other chemicals, it will cause a reaction." Sigit explained.
Sigit re-emphasized, the sound of the explosion was caused by the pressure of the reactors or tools to make chemical substances from polyester or yarn. In the reactor, said Sigit, it flows through a pipe to the filter and then a leak occurs.
"The liquid containing hot water is then mixed with chemicals, then when released into the air it creates a pressure difference and an explosion or booming sound pushes the pipes up about 40 degrees which causes the contents to gush out," explained Sigit.
As a result of the explosion, six people were reportedly injured and are undergoing treatment.
