The Supreme Court Continues To Take Steps To Reduce Legal Barriers To Accelerate Economic Development, Jokowi Says

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) hopes that the Supreme Court can make various strategic efforts to reduce legal barriers to accelerate economic development in the country.

There are various steps that can be taken, said Jokowi. One of them is by accelerating the handling of civil cases through simple lawsuits to reforming the implementation of decisions.

"We hope that the Supreme Court will continue to make strategic efforts in reducing legal obstacles to accelerate economic development," Jokowi said in his remarks at the 2021 Supreme Court's Special Session of the Annual Report which was broadcast on the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube, Tuesday, February 22.

"This includes accelerating the handling of civil cases through a simple lawsuit mechanism, encouraging consistency of decisions, and reforming the implementation of decisions," he added.

Jokowi said the various steps that the Supreme Court had to take were in line with the current transformation carried out by the government in the legal field.

In this effort, he continued, the government has carried out structural reforms, deregulation, and debureaucratization. Thus, MA is expected to be able to participate in carrying out the transformation.

"We also carry out transformations in the legal sector through structural reforms, deregulation and de-bureaucratization in order to increase legal certainty and ease of doing business, attract as much as possible and ensure investment security, expand employment opportunities and increase the nation's competitiveness, and eradicate corruption," explained the former president. In addition, Jokowi wants full support given by this institution. This is because efforts to accelerate transformation for the sake of economic development cannot be carried out.

He said the active participation of other institutions, from the legislature to the judiciary, was needed to ensure that the efforts made could run.

"The government needs full support from all components of the nation, the government needs full support from the legislative and judicial institutions, the government needs support from the Supreme Court and the high courts of district courts throughout Indonesia," said Jokowi.

"The role of the Supreme Court as a guardian of justice is very crucial in supporting the transformation of Indonesia by producing landmark decisions that provide fair legal certainty for the community, which provide fair legal certainty for business actors and investors, which protect state assets and other public assets. " he concluded.
