MATARAM - The Mataram City Police Criminal Investigation Unit team examined officials from the West Nusa Tenggara Education and Culture Office (Dikbud) regarding the handling of cases of medical waste that had piled up and scattered in the former Community Eye Health Center (BKMM) building.

"The person concerned is being questioned about the existence of the SLB (special school) which now occupies the former NTB BKMM building," said Head of the Criminal Investigation Unit of the Mataram Police, Kompol Kadek Adi Budi Astawa in Mataram, Antara, Friday, February 18.

Apart from the Department of Education and Culture of NTB, investigators also examined experts in the pharmaceutical field. This examination is part of the need for case title activities. "So the examination that we carried out until the beginning of this week was to strengthen the evidence that would be the completeness of the case title," he said.

The Mataram Police on December 22, 2021 found medical waste piled up and scattered in three rooms of the former NTB BKMM Building, Cakranegara, Mataram City.

From the various medical wastes, it was found that plastic packages containing drugs had piled up in the room, including syringes, condoms, infusions, and liquid medical materials strewn across the front yard.

It was even found that a number of drugs were identified that had not expired. From the effort to clean up the medical waste, which was later destroyed by the local Environment and Forestry Service, the total weight reached 6 tons.

The pile of medical waste is thought to have occurred since the NTB BKMM, which is the Technical Implementation Unit (UPT) of the NTB Health Service, moved in 2018 to the NTB Provincial General Hospital (RSUP) building which is an old building on Jalan Pejanggik, Mataram City.

The NTB Health Office and the City of Mataram have filled a number of rooms in the former NTB BKMM Building.

The former NTB BKMM building is now a means of supporting teaching and learning for students at the State 2 Mataram Special School (SLB). Of the dozens of existing rooms, seven of them have been functioned by SLB Negeri 2 Mataram.

In relation to these findings, the police investigated the alleged criminal environmental pollution for the management of hazardous and toxic waste (B3).

Police from the NTB Regional Police Certain Crime Units have asked for clarification from a number of parties, especially the agencies that had offices in that location, be it the NTB BKMM, the Mataram City Health Service and the NTB Health Service.

"From the clarification process, so far no one has acknowledged the ownership of the waste, so we will hold a case to determine the next steps," he said.
