Many Challenges For Elected KPU-Bawaslu Members, Needdem To Remind Wahyu Setiawan Case Don't Happen Again

JAKARTA - The DPR Plenary Meeting announced the names of seven KPU members and five Bawaslu members who were elected for the 2022-2027 period. The 12 names are the results of the fit and proper test held by Commission II of the DPR on February 14-16.

A researcher from the Association for Elections and Democracy (Perludem), Fadli Ramadhanil, believes that the KPU and Bawaslu commissioners will face difficult challenges during their future tenures.

According to him, the 2024 Simultaneous Elections have very difficult and complex challenges. One of them is facing the crush of the stages of the election and the adjacent pilkada.

"This has to be regulated and designed in such a way by the new election organizers," said Fadli in his statement, Friday, February 18.

Needdem assessed that the elected election organizers must design effective, rational, and transparent election management. So, said Fadli, the implementation of the general election and regional head elections remains within the corridor of democratic values and integrity.

"As election organizers in the momentum of the simultaneous general election and the 2024 simultaneous regional head election, they will face a test of integrity all the time," he explained.

The most obvious test felt by the KPU commissioners and elected Bawaslu members, said Fadli, was a matter of integrity. This is because there are many interests from all political groups that will affect the professional work and integrity of the election organizers.

"Don't let the Wahyu Setiawan case repeat itself. This is something that the elected KPU and Bawaslu members must take care of," Fadli urged.

Fadli added that acts that violate integrity will not only damage the individual organizers, but also trust in the election administration.

"And of course it destroys Indonesian democracy," he said.
