JAKARTA - Deputy Chairman of Commission II of the DPR from the PKB faction, Luqman Hakim agrees with the General Elections Commission (KPU) who proposed that the 2024 election campaign period be held for 120 days.

It is known, the determination of the campaign period had become a polemic because of differences of opinion with the government who wanted it to be carried out no more than 90 days. Meanwhile, a number of factions in Commission II of the DPR proposed 50 days, 60 days to 75 days.

"I agree with the KPU. The campaign period is 120 days to provide sufficient time for the public to identify all candidates for DPRD members in the electoral district, DPD candidates and presidential and vice-presidential candidates. 120 days is not long for campaigning," said Deputy Chairman of Commission II DPR, the PKB faction. Luqman Hakim told reporters, Thursday, February 17. The PKB politician thinks that ideally the presidential and vice presidential candidates should meet with the Indonesian people from Sabang to Merauke so that the campaign period can be longer.

He admits that the existence of social media can be used by candidates for campaigning. However, according to him, face-to-face meetings with the community are still important.

"The number of regencies/cities in Indonesia is more than 510 regions. This means that if one day a presidential/vice presidential candidate campaigns in one district/city, it's still lacking," explained Luqman. Previously, Chairman of the General Elections Commission (KPU) Ilham Saputra said his party remained firm propose to Commission II of the DPR RI regarding the 2024 election campaign period for 120 days.

Previously, a number of factions in the DPR asked that the campaign period be shortened to 50 to 90 days. "KPU still proposes 120 days with several considerations. The first is related to disputes or lawsuits against nominations made by internal political parties, logistical preparations, and so on," said Ilham at the launch of the 2024 Simultaneous Election Voting Day at the KPU office, Menteng, Central Jakarta, Monday, February 14. Even so, Ilham said that until now there has been no decision regarding the determination of the campaign period. The KPU will still discuss this further with the council in the next few days. "The KPU will again submit a draft KPU regulation related to the draft election schedule stage to Commission II of the DPR," Ilham said.
