JAKARTA - DKI Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan will explain the reduction in congestion in Jakarta over the past few years because it is considered to have a positive impact on carbon reduction at the Urban 20 Forum (U20) as part of supporting the G20 Presidency of Indonesia.

"We are here to bring our own 'best practice' to show," said Anies during an online discussion about Urban 20 in Jakarta, reported by Antara, Wednesday, February 16.

According to Anies, the decrease in congestion in Jakarta is contributed by the integration of public transportation which also affects carbon reduction.

"Reducing congestion in Jakarta will later become one of the experiences that can be shared with governors, mayors, or regional leaders in G20 countries or non-G20 members," he said.

Anies added, as well as other cities will showcase the efforts that have been made to urban issues that are shared as experiences and exchange ideas with other countries.

“Jakarta will bring experience in integrating public transportation which has an impact on reducing carbon and reducing congestion. This is shown through 'time series' data for the last five-six years, we have seen a decrease in the level of congestion," he said.

Anies believes that carbon reduction in urban issues will be relevant to the issues discussed at the G20 head of state level.

Access to equal and sustainable mobility with the integration of public transportation is one of the six main agendas that Anies will bring to the discussion of the U20 Forum.

Later, the results of the discussion at the U20 Forum in August 2022 are expected to be a recommendation to be brought again at the G20 Summit in Nusa Dua, Bali, October 2022.

Previously, the world city congestion rating agency, Tomtom International BV released the congestion index in Jakarta, which fell to 46th in 2021 compared to 31st in the previous year.

Anies then shared information on the reduction in the congestion rating through the Instagram story account @aniesbaswedan on Thursday, February 10.

However, the international agency's website states that the COVID-19 pandemic is the main cause or factor that reduces congestion levels in big cities in the world, including in Jakarta.

During this time, the level of congestion in major cities in the world has increased by two to three percent per year.

However, since the last two years when the world was hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, things have turned upside down, lowering the level of city congestion in the world. Jakarta is part of 404 cities in 58 countries as measured in the 2021 Tomtom Traffic Index.

In 2021, the level of congestion in Jakarta will decrease to 34 percent in the yellow category, after in 2020 it reached 36 percent. Jakarta was once in the fourth position in the world as a city with a high level of congestion in 2017.

The congestion rating then gradually improved, namely in 2018 it was in seventh position, then 10 in 2019 and in 2020 it was at 31.
