SMRC Survey: PDIP's Strict Attitude On The Case Of Arteria Dahlan Regarding Sundanese Language Is Supported By The Majority Of West Java Residents

JAKARTA - The West Java PDIP Regional Representative Council's (DPD) stance on the case of Arteria Dahlan's statement regarding the Sundanese language is supported by the majority of West Java residents.

This is revealed in the findings of the Saiful Mujani Research and Consulting (SMRC) survey entitled “Parties, Governors, and the President: West Java Public Views” which was released online in Jakarta, on February 15.

SMRC Program Manager, Saidiman Ahmad, explained that around 66 percent of West Java residents were aware of the case of Arteria Dahlan's statement which was considered offensive to the Sundanese.

"Of the 66 percent who know, the majority (64 percent) agree that the DPR member's statement offends the Sundanese ethnicity," Saidiman said.

In this survey, continued Saidiman, the West Java public were also asked for their views on the attitudes and protests of the Chairman of the West Java Regional Management Board (DPD), Ono Surono, over the Arteria Dahlan case.

Of the 66 percent of West Java residents who know about the case, 45 percent know that the Chairman of the West Java DPD, Ono Surono, sent a protest and a request to the PDIP Central Executive Board (DPP) to impose severe sanctions on Arteria.

"Of those who know the attitude and steps of the West Java PDIP DPD, almost all (89 percent) say they like it. There are only 6 percent who don't like it and 5 percent who don't have an attitude,” said Saidiman.

This survey was conducted by telephone interview on 5-8 February 2022. The total sample collected by trained data collectors reached 801 respondents. The sample was randomly selected from the population of West Java residents aged 17 years and over or married and had a telephone/cellphone.

The data was weighted so that the demographic profile of the sample was proportional to the population resulting from the census. The survey's margin of error is estimated at +/- 3.5 percent at the 95 percent confidence level, assuming simple random sampling.
