Komnas HAM Regrets The Violence Experienced By Residents In Wadas Village

JAKARTA - The National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) of the Republic of Indonesia regrets the acts of violence carried out by the police against residents and their legal assistants in Wadas Village, Bener District, Purworejo Regency, Central Java.

"The Indonesian National Human Rights Commission also regrets the arrests of a number of residents who are still being held at the Purworejo Police," said Komnas HAM RI Commissioner for Education and Counseling Beka Ulung Hapsara in Jakarta, Wednesday, February 9.

The violence by the police against residents was the result of residents who refused to use their village as a "quarry" mining site. In the end, there was chaos in the process of measuring people's land for andesite mining in Wadas Village.

In response to these conditions, the Indonesian National Human Rights Commission issued or called for four important points. First, ask the Serayu Opak River Basin Center (BBWS SO) and the National Land Agency (BPN), to postpone the measurement of land belonging to the residents of Wadas Village who have agreed to the measurement.

Second, Komnas HAM asked the Central Java Police to withdraw the officers assigned to Wadas Village, and evaluate the total approach taken and impose sanctions on officers who are proven to have committed violence against residents.

"Purworejo Police immediately released residents who were detained at the Purworejo Police Station," said Beka.

Furthermore, the Governor of Central Java, BBWS Serayu Opak and related parties prepared alternative solutions related to the problem of andesite mining in Wadas Village to be presented in a dialogue that would be facilitated by the Indonesian National Human Rights Commission.

Finally, Komnas HAM asks all parties to exercise restraint, respect the rights of others and create a conducive atmosphere for the establishment of dialogue based on human rights principles.
