JAKARTA - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) believes that former Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Azis Syamsuddin, will be found guilty by the panel of judges at the Jakarta Corruption Court (Tipikor).

Azis is a defendant in a bribery case related to the handling of a corruption case handled by the KPK in Central Lampung Regency, Lampung.

"However, the KPK is very confident that the entire process of proof through the evidence presented at this trial can provide confidence for the Panel of Judges regarding the actions of the defendant," said Acting KPK spokesman Ali Fikri in his statement, quoted from Antara, Tuesday, February 1.

He said this in response to Azis' defense memorandum or plea at the trial at the Jakarta Corruption Court, Monday, January 31. He said that the defendant Azis certainly had the right to defend himself, including denying the entire contents of the prosecution team's indictment.

"KPK ensures that in every case handling process it always works according to the applicable rules and legal corridors," said Ali.

In his defense, Azis revealed that he had no intention of giving bribes to former KPK investigator Stepanus Robin Pattuju because he believed that Robin did not have the capacity and ability to determine cases.

"The public prosecutor made an imaginary claim because the witnesses did not support each other. This is a character assassination for me," said Azis.

Azis was sentenced to 4 years and 2 months in prison plus a fine of IDR 250 million, subsidiary to 6 months in prison for allegedly giving bribes worth IDR 3,099 billion and USD 36 thousand, bringing the total to around IDR 3,619 billion to Robin and lawyer Maskur Husain.

The KPK Public Prosecutor (JPU) in his indictment stated that Azis was suspected of giving bribes to take care of the KPK's investigation into the Special Allocation Fund (DAK) of the APBN-P Central Lampung Regency for the 2017 Fiscal Year in which Azis was suspected of being involved.
