Stellantis And CATL Form Business Joint LFP Battery Factory In Spain

JAKARTA - Stellantis and CATL reached an agreement to jointly invest in forming a joint venture aimed at building a large-scale European lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery factory in Zaragoza, Spain.

Later, the plant will be fully carbon neutral, and development will be carried out in stages with a target to start production by the end of 2026 at the Stellantis Zaragoza location, Spain.

This facility can reach a capacity of up to 50 GWh, depending on the evolution of the electricity market in Europe and the ongoing support of authorities in Spain and the European Union.ATL's joint venture between CATL and Stellantis will increase the best LFP Stellantis offerings in its class in Europe, allowing the automaker to offer passengers, crossovers, and higher quality, durable, and affordable battery-electric SUVs.

"Stellantis is committed to the future of decarbonization, utilizing all the advanced battery technology available to deliver competitive electric vehicle products to our customers," said Stellantis Chairman John Elkann, quoted from his official website, Wednesday, December 11.

Earlier, in November 2023, Stellantis and CATL signed a non-binding MOU for local supply of LFP battery cells and modules for electric vehicle production in Europe, and established long-term collaborations in two strategic areas, such as creating a tech roadmap that dares to support Stellantis.

"This important joint venture with our partner CATL will bring innovative battery production to manufacturing sites that are already leaders in clean and renewable energy, helping to push for a 360-degree sustainable approach. I would like to thank all stakeholders involved in making today's announcements, including Spanish authorities for their relentless support," he added.

On the same occasion, CATL CEO Robin Zeng said the joint venture brings good cooperation, and believes it can be combined promisingly.

"This joint venture has brought our cooperation with Stellantis to a higher level, and I believe our cutting-edge battery technology and outstanding operating knowledge combined with Stellantis' decades of experience in running local businesses in Zaragoza will ensure a great success story in the industry," said Robin Zeng.

As is known, CATL presents the most advanced battery manufacturing technology to Europe through its two factories in Germany and Hungary, which are already in operation. This facility in Spain will enhance its ability to support good goals to customers, and further affirm its commitment to advancing e-mobility efforts and energy transitions in Europe and the global market.
