BMKG's Explanation Of The M 6.4 Yogyakarta Earthquake Whose Guncangan Was Felt In A Number Of Areas

YOGYAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said the tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 that rocked the southern Indian Ocean of the Special Region of Yogyakarta on Friday (30/6) at 19.57 WIB was an intermediate earthquake.

"By paying attention to the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred was a medium earthquake due to the subduction activity of the Indo-Australian and Eurasian Plates," said Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center Daryono in a press release reported by ANTARA, Friday, June 30.

The results of the BMKG analysis showed an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0. The epicenter of the earthquake was located at coordinates 8.63 South Latitude, 110.08 East Longitude, or precisely located at sea at a distance of 81 KM south of Wates City, Yogyakarta Special Region at a depth of 67 KM.

"The results of the analysis of the source mechanism show that the earthquake has a thrust fault mechanism," he said.

BMKG said this earthquake had an impact and was felt in the Kulonprogo, Bantul, Nganjuk, Kebumen, Ponorogo areas with an intensity scale of IV MMI. Then felt in Kediri and Mojokerto with an intensity scale of III MMI.

"The modeling results show that this earthquake has no potential for a tsunami," he said.

BMKG also stated that until 20.40 WIB, based on the results of BMKG monitoring, it showed that there were five aftershocks with the largest magnitude of M4.5.

For this incident, BMKG appealed to the public to remain calm and not be influenced by issues that cannot be justified. BMKG also appealed to avoid buildings that were cracked or damaged by the earthquake.

"Check and make sure the building where you live is earthquake-resistant enough, or there is no damage due to earthquake vibrations that endanger the stability of the building before you return to the house," he said.

Meanwhile, the Commander of the Operations Control Center (Pusdalops) of the Bantul DIY Regency BPBD, Aka Luk Firmansyah, when confirmed, said the earthquake caused damage to seven houses. However, this data is still temporary.

"Meanwhile, seven houses were lightly damaged, then one person suffered minor injuries during the evacuation," he said.
