Kane has equaled Rooney's record after the World Cup in Qatar. However, he missed the chance to break that record after his penalty execution in the quarter-finals against France, bounced over the crossbar.
The failure delayed England captain's ambitions until this final international break, with Kane finally surpassing Rooney's 53 goals.
The Tottenham Hotspur player has advantages over Rooney. If the former Manchester United player needed 120 appearances to score 53 goals, Kane only needed 81 appearances to score 54 goals.
Rooney has surpassed Bobby Charlton's old record for collecting 49 goals for The Three Lions, in 2015. Now, that record belongs to Kane.
