Emiliano Martinez Auctions For The 2022 World Cup Finals To Help Children's Cancer Hospitals

JAKARTA Argentina's national team goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez auctioned off the gloves he wore on a penalty shootout against France in last year's Qatar World Cup final to help children's cancer hospitals.

The gloves were officially auctioned on Friday local time. The report said the gloves were sold at a price of 45 thousand US dollars or Rp. 697 million.

"45 thousand dollars for Martinez's gloves to help Garrahan's children!" said the Argentine Pediatric Foundation on Instagram quoted from Sport NDTV on Saturday, March 11, 2023. The reservoir was worn by the Aston Villa goalkeeper as he faced a penalty shootout against France in Qatar's 2022 World Cup final after both teams drew 3-3 for 120 minutes.

Argentina then won 4-2 to lift the third title in competition history. Tango's team previously lifted this trophy in 1978 and 1986.

The auction process was held online. Martinez was not present at the auction, but he was connected via video from his home in England.

"When they gave me the option to donate World Cup gloves, I didn't hesitate, it was a good goal for the players," Martinez said at the event.

The inside of the gloves was signed by Martinez when announcing the donation in February.

"The World Cup finals are not played every day. This (handshop) is special. But it is much more helpful for a child than I display it in the frame of my house," he said.
