Luka Modric Wants To Stay In Real Madrid If It Is Worth Being Defended, Not Because He Is Loved
JAKARTA Luka Modric's desire to remain in Real Madrid is still very large. He even felt he was still able to prove himself to get a contract extension from the club.
Croatia's international contract with the Spanish capital team is currently entering the last six months. Negotiations for an extension are still stalled and are expected to resume at the end of the season.
However, the new contract will likely only be awarded by Los Blancos if Modric's performance remains promising. Otherwise, it is likely that Madrid will let him go to give a place to their young players.
"I wanted to continue because I deserved it, not because they gave it to me. They never gave me anything in my life and that's not going to happen now," said Modric, who won the 2018 Ballon d'Or.
Despite wanting to survive, Modric still leaves his fate to the club. Moreover, Madrid currently has a large stock of young midfielders who need more playing time for regeneration in midfield.
"But I have to talk to the club, see what they think and we'll see. Regardless of what happens, nothing will change my relationship with Real Madrid: it's a club in my life, whatever happens," he said.
The 37-year-old has consistently signed a 12-month extension in recent seasons. That refers to Los Blancos' policy of players over the age of 30.
With the old age, it is possible for Madrid to keep Modric even smaller. Especially now that they have ranks of young midfielders such as French duo Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga.
In addition, Los Blancos are also reportedly looking for young England player Jude Bellingham in the transfer window this summer. If the plan is successful, it is not impossible that Madrid will rule out Modric.
