Students In Depok Are Prohibited From Celebrating Valentine's Day

Depok City Government (Pemkot) through the Depok City Education Office prohibits its students from celebrating Valentine's Day (Valentine Day) both outside and at school. Because the local municipal government considers Valentine's Day not in accordance with Indonesian religious, social and cultural norms.

This is also stated in the Notification on Prohibition of Participation and Celebrating Valentine's Day (Valentine Day) in number 421/690/Secret-2023.

In the letter, it was explained that the Depok City Education Office asked school supervisors such as the Principal to teachers to monitor their students' activities to celebrate Valentine's Day (Valentine Day).

The following are the steps taken by the school regarding Valentine's Day:

1. Encourage students not to follow and promote affection (Valentine Day) both at home and outside school

2. Supervisors, school principals and teachers supervise and monitor student activities in each education unit.

3. Embedding attitudes and behaviors preserving the noble values of Indonesian culture in the school environment

4. Taking preventive measures and ensuring students do not follow and celebrate the activity in question

The VOI team tried to contact the Head of the Depok City Education Office (Kadisdik) Wijayanto regarding the notification letter. However, until the news was broadcast, the party concerned did not provide information.
