This Man Was Threatened With 20 Years In Prison For Use Of Bombs When Looking For Fish
JAKARTA - A man with the initials FN from Semau Island, East Nusa Tenggara, is threatened with 20 years in prison who is suspected of catching fish using explosives or bombs so that it can damage the environment.
"The suspect is suspected of violating Article 1 paragraph (1) of the Emergency Law Number 12 of 1951 concerning Firearms and Explosives, with the threat of death penalty or life imprisonment or a maximum temporary prison sentence of twenty years," said Deputy Director of Polairud Polda NTT AKBP I Gede Putra Yase in Kupang, Monday, January 16, as reported by Antara.
FN was arrested on January 14 while catching fish using explosives or fish bombs so that it can get a large number of fish.
"From the results of the preliminary examination, it was known that the suspect caught using a bomb because it was a low cost to make fish bombs with a lot of fishing results and personal benefits," he said.
Gede Yase said the arrest of FN began with information obtained from fishermen on Semau Island, that in the Uiasa waters, Semau Island, there were still frequent fishing using explosives.
From this information, officers from the Ditpolairud Polda NTT deployed patrol boats for Sebayur Island XXII-3011 and KPC XXII-2005 to conduct observations in the coastal area of Uiasa Village.
While on patrol, the police saw and heard two explosions accompanied by bursts of sea water upwards. The police then gave chase and managed to arrest a man with the initials FN with a canoe.
When arrested, the police found a homemade bomb ready for use, a canoe with trawlers and rowing as well.
Now the investigation is still ongoing because the suspect FN is suspected of having a colleague who fled during an arrest attempt.
