MALUKU - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said that the 5.1 magnitude earthquake that rocked the Banda Sea, Maluku, was due to subduction activity in the Banda Sea.Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center Daryono said the epicenter of the earthquake was located at coordinates 7.22 degrees south latitude, 130.59 degrees east longitude, or precisely located at sea at a distance of 38 km northwest of Wer Maktian, West Southeast Maluku, Maluku, at a depth of 116 km."By paying attention to the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred was a medium earthquake due to subduction activity in the Banda Sea," he said when confirmed in Jakarta, Antara, Friday, January 13.The results of the analysis of the source mechanism show that the earthquake has a low-down movement mechanism (oblique-normal)."The earthquake that occurred on Friday, January 13, 2023, at 19.44 WIB had updated parameters with a magnitude of M4.85," he said.The earthquake was impacted and felt in the Molomaru area with an intensity scale of II-III MMI (vibrational felt by several people, light objects that were hung swayed)."The modeling results show that this earthquake has no potential for a tsunami," he said.As of 20.25 WIB, he said, the results of BMKG monitoring had not shown any aftershock activity.He appealed to the public to remain calm and not be influenced by issues that cannot be justified."In addition, avoid buildings that are cracked or damaged by the earthquake.
