Autobiography And Nana Entered Asian Film Awards 2023
JAKARTA - Two Indonesian films received nominations at the 2023 Asian Film Awards. As the name implies, this award was made to appreciate films from Asia.
Before, Now, and Then (Nana) directed by Kamila Andini received five nominations namely Best Actress (Happy Salma), Best Supporting Actress (Laura Basuki), Best Cinematography (Batara Goempar), Best Costume Design (Retno Ratih Damayanti), and Best Production Design (Vida Sylvia Theresia).
Happy Salma will compete with Sylvia Chang, because Lam, Tang Wei, and Baisho Chieko are in the main nominations. Likewise with Laura Basuki who faced Sakura Ando, Kim So Jin, Tao Yin, and Yumi Kawai.
Nana tells of a woman in the 1960s who fights for her life after being left by her family in a role. She befriends her husband's savings and seeks their independence.
Apart from Nana, Makbul Mubarak's Autobiography film also received two categories of nominations for its first feature film.
Makbul Mubarak was nominated for Best New Director and competed with Saim Sadiq (Jo Menya), Jigme Trinley (One and Four), Chie Hayakawa (Plan 75), and Kim Se-in (The Apartment with Two Women).
His name is also again included in Best Screenplay nominations. Through this nomination, he is side by side with well-known scriptwriters such as Chung Seo Kyung and Park Chan Wook (Decision to Leave), Ryusuke Hamaguchi and Takasama Oe (Drive My Car), Jiangjiang Liu and Min Yu (Lighting Up the Stars), and Lav Diaz (When the Waves Are Gone).
Autobiography tells the story of a child who works managing an empty house owned by a retiree. Life changes the child when he sees the journey of a retired father who runs for regent in his village. It is known that this film has not been shown theatrically in theaters.
In this year's event, the film Decision to Leave bagged 10 nominations followed by Drive My Car which received eight nominations.
The committee explained that 30 films from 22 regions and selected countries for 81 nominations will compete for 16 awards at the 16th Asian Film Awards.
The 2023 Asian Film Awards will be held at the Hong Kong Palace Museum on March 12, 2023.
