BMKG Weather Predictions: Rain Melanda Jakarta, Banten, North Sumatra To West Kalimantan Today

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) released an early weather warning. Heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds is expected to occur in Jakarta, Banten, North Sumatra (North Sumatra), West Kalimantan (West Kalimantan) and a number of parts of Indonesia today, Friday, December 30.

Citing the BMKG website via Antara, it is explained further regarding the potential for heavy rain that can be accompanied by lightning, including in the provinces of West Sumatra, Bengkulu, Jambi, Riau, South Sumatra, Lampung.

Similar conditions also have the potential to occur in Banten, West Java, Central Java, DI Yogyakarta, East Java, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, Central Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, Gorontalo, Central Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, North Maluku and Maluku.

Meanwhile, areas that have the potential to experience strong winds are West Sulawesi and Papua.

Head of BMKG Dwikorita Karnawati appealed to the public to be aware of extreme weather that could potentially cause the impact of hydrometeorological disasters towards the end of the year.

He revealed that heavy rains, among others, could cause a drastic increase in river water discharge, which could cause flooding and flash floods.

Heavy rains, he continued, could also cause landslides, rock avalanches, or soil erosion in highlands and hills and mountains.

Dwikorita also appealed to local governments and residents living along river and hilly areas to increase vigilance and preparedness for potential natural disasters when heavy rains occur for a long time.

"We ask the public to be careful when doing activities outside the home. If there is no urgent need, it is better to stay at home waiting for the weather to return to normal," he concluded.
