Replace Luis Enrique, Appointment Luis De La Fuente As Spain's Coach Wait Approved By The Council

JAKARTA Luis de la Fuente has been officially appointed coach of the Spanish national team following the sacking of previous coach Luis Enrique.

Fuente, who previously coached the Spanish U-21 national team, was announced as La Furia Roja's new coach just hours after Enrique's dismissal.

"Luis de La Fuente has been appointed as the new coach of the Spanish national team," read a Reuters report quoted Thursday, December 8, 2022.

De la Fuente was recommended for the role, but his appointment would have to be approved by the council, which will only meet on Monday next week.

Sports Director Francisco Molina herself has forwarded a report to the President of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) Luis Rubiales.

"He recommended the choice of coach La Rioja, who was previously the U-21 coach, to lead the new stages starting after the World Cup in Qatar," the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) said in a statement.

De la Fuente has been part of the Spanish team since 2013. He coached the age group team and successfully led Spain to a silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

In addition, Luis De La Fuente also achieved success in bringing Spain U-19 to the U-19 European Cup champion in 2015.

Three years later, the 61-year-old coach helped Spain U-18 win a gold medal at the Midranean Games. Then in 2019 he managed to bring his team to win the U-21 European Cup.
