France Next To The FIFA Of The Annulled Griezmann Goal Case

JAKARTA - The French national team expressed their concerns to the International Football Federation (FIFA) after the match against Tunisia. They complained about the referee's decision to annul Antoine Griezmann's goal in that match.

Les Bleus felt that referee Michael Conger's decision was wrong. This is the main reason France has complained to FIFA.

"We wrote a complaint after Antoine Griezmann's goal, in our opinion, was wrongly disallowed. This complaint must be filed within 24 hours of the final whistle," the French Football Federation (FFF) wrote in a statement as quoted by ESPN, Thursday, December 1.

In the last match of Group D at Education City Stadium, Wednesday night WIB, Les Bleus surprisingly lost 0-1. Tunisia first scored through Wahbi Khazri in the 58th minute.

However, Griezmann broke into Tunisia's goal to equalize the score 1-1. The goal occurred in the second half extra minutes.

Referee Michael Conger had approved the goal and the game started again before blowing the whistle signaling the game was over.

But when the game was over, the referee got a signal from the VAR room to check Griezmann's goal. Based on the review, the referee then annulled Griezmann's goal because the Atletico Madrid player was considered to be in an offside position.

The same source explained that based on Law 1.10 on VAR from the IFAB (International Football Association Board), if the game had restarted, VAR could not intervene. Referring to this, referees should not be allowed to review goals.

FFF has sent their statement to FIFA to return Griezmann's goal and give France a 1-1 draw.

If the complaint is granted by FIFA, the acquisition of French and Tunisian points in Group D will change even if it does not affect the final position of the countries in the group.

France itself has now secured tickets to the last 16 of the 2022 World Cup with the status of group winners. Australia followed as runners-up, followed by Tunisia and Denmark.
