Sony Not Intending To Be New Consoles In The Near Future, PS6 Release 2028?
JAKARTA - After releasing the PlayStation 5 globally recently, Sony and Microsoft have plans to release their next console, namely the PlayStation 6 (PS6) at least in 2028.
This news was revealed in a British regulatory document regarding a continuing investigation by the Competition and Market Authority over Microsoft's proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard.
Both companies, both Sony and Microsoft, launched their newest generation consoles (PS5 and Zboz Series X/S) in November 2020. Responding to CMA concerns, Microsoft said the next-generation console would still be released in years and claimed any impact from Activision's deal was highly speculative.
The [Microsoft and Activision] parties do not deny that some of the gamers are likely to reassess their console holdings at the start of the new generation, he wrote, citing the VGC, Friday, November 25. But they also note that this is an event that only happens about every eight years.
On the other hand, the report also shows Sony's argument that Microsoft has offered to continue making Activision games available only on PlayStation until at least until 2027.
This means that Microsoft intends to remove Call of Duty from the PlayStation platform after 2027, Microsoft argues that "Sony has more than enough time to adjust its commercial strategy".
"Microsoft has offered to continue to make Activision games available only on PlayStation until 2027. By the time SIE launches its next generation of PlayStation consoles (which are likely to occur around [deleted]), SIE will lose access to Call of Duty and other Activision titles, making it very vulnerable to consumer switching and further declines in competitiveness," Sony wrote.
