Mexico's National Team Squad For The 2022 World Cup: Martino Elects Raul Jimenez Instead Of Chicharito
JAKARTA - The Mexican national team has released a complete list of players who were brought to the 2022 World Cup. Of the 26 players who were brought, the Los Angeles Galaxy striker, Javier Chicharito Hernandez, was not brought in.
Gerardo Martino coach actually filled Chicharito's position by calling Raul Jimenez. This player is a Premier League club striker, Wolverhampton Wanderers.
With Wolves this season, Jimenez did not get much playing time with just four appearances in total. Jimenez lost place in the Wolves squad after suffering a series of injuries.
The worst happened against Arsenal in 2020. At that time the injury resulted in Jimenez's skull cracked and his brain bleeding.
But like a miracle, Jimenez managed to survive even though he had to go through a very long recovery period.
If you look at Jimenez's background in the team, Gerardo Martino's decision is questionable. But the coach's choice to bring him to Qatar makes quite a sense, given Jimenez's status as one of the elite strikers in his country.
Jimenez is also the only player from the Premier League competition to be called up to the Mexican squad for the 2022 World Cup. Seeing the record of international goals, Jimenez did not disappoint because he had scored 26 goals in 96 games.
Quoted from Sporting News, Tuesday, November 14, currently El Tricolores troops are still undergoing a training camp in Girona, Spain before leaving for Qatar.
Martino's troops will also have a friendly match against Iraq and Sweden before starting their fight in Group C, against Poland on 22 November.
