Two Types Of Appreciation Most Needed Children From Parents

JAKARTA - There are two types of appreciation from parents for children, namely material rewards and social rewards. Child and adolescent psychologist from the University of Indonesia's Applied Psychology Institute (UI) Vera Itabiliana Hadiwijojo explained."The material rewards are an appreciation given in the form of objects such as children's favorite snacks, toys, stickers or other objects," Vera said as quoted by ANTARA, Saturday, November 12.Meanwhile, other forms of appreciation are important for the development of the baby, namely social rewards. The appreciation consists of three forms, namely affect, such as giving hugs, tapping on the shoulder, and kissing on the cheek. Then there are also words of praise, and the last one is in the form of activities like parents playing with their children without holding a gadget so that the time together becomes of good quality.Giving both types of appreciation is important for children to celebrate the achievements they have obtained and can increase the confidence of the baby. The achievements in question do not always have to be large but can be started from small positive actions, such as brushing teeth without being told or tidying your own bed.It is good for every appreciation given by parents to their children needs to be adjusted to every achievement made. Parents can also give appropriate appreciation by making an agreement with the baby. For example, mother and child agree that children will get their appreciation in the form of their favorite chocolate if today they remember doing homework without being reminded. However, for some achievements that can have a positive impact for the long term, parents can give more appreciation so that children are more enthusiastic about carrying out their responsibilities."There are times when rewards need to be given more weight to shape the behaviors that are expected to appear in children," said Vera.
