P20 Jadi Ajang DPR Shows Commitment To The Republic Of Indonesia Reduce Emisi Via The Concept Of Go Green

JAKARTA - The DPR is ready to host The 8th G20 Parliamentary Speaker Summit (P20). The DPR will show Indonesia's commitment to achieving sustainable development goals or the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG's) which is the world's agenda.

"One of them is a green economy development strategy and low carbon to reduce emissions," said Deputy Chairperson of the Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Agency (BKASP) Gilang Dhierafararez, Thursday, September 29.

The P20 will be held at the Parliament Complex, on 6-7 October 2022. P20 is a parliamentary forum for the G20 countries which will be held in a series of G20 Summits.

In addition to holding the G20 presidency for the first time, Indonesia has also hosted the multilateral forum.

The DPR will raise issues regarding the development of the green economy at P20. The DPR is ready to show that it has started implementing environmentally friendly policies or going green, one of which is the construction of Solar Power Plants (PLTS) in the DPR Building.

"The solar panels built in the DPR's Energy Park are used to meet the needs of additional electricity in the parliament," he said.

Not only that, the Chairperson of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, has also ordered her staff to implement the practice of going green to support green development. Such as reducing the use of plastic bottles, minimizing paper use (paperless), environmentally friendly waste management, and others.

"The Chairperson of the DPR started the DPR Green movement as a real action to fight the climate crisis where this issue is a world agenda that must be carried out together," said Gilang.

This member of Commission III of the DPR RI added that Puan also continues to campaign for parliament to reduce the carbon footprint starting from the council itself. Puan provided a number of technical inputs so that the P20 event later implies Indonesia's commitment to reducing emissions.

Mrs. Chairman yesterday also suggested that the P20 meeting rooms at the DPR Building be automatic. So if there are no people in the room, the lights and electricity in the room will automatically turn off," explained the legislator from the Central Java II electoral district.

In P20 activities, the DPR will also encourage the planting of millions of trees for Indonesia and the rest of the world. The tree planting movement is intended to suppress global warming.

Of course it is important to bring the issue of green economy considering that the problem of environmental damage is one of the emergency issues faced by the world. All countries must be able to show their commitment to carrying out concrete actions to seek sustainable development, said Gilang.

The DPR carries the theme "Stronger Parliament for Sustainable Recovery" in P20 which is in line with the theme of the G20 Presidency, namely "Recover Together, Recover Stronger". There are four main issues raised by the DPR in the prestigious international forum.

The first is about sustainable development and a green economy. The second is about an inclusive economy and a strong economy to face the latest challenges, namely the food, energy, and stagnation crisis. The third issue is related to effective parliament and dynamic democracy. Then the fourth issue is about gender equality and women's empowerment.

It is certain that the Russian Parliament and the Ukrainian Parliament will attend the P20 to complement 36 countries that are considered to have a strategic role in the global economy and politics. Gilang hopes that the P20 held in Indonesia can become a bridge of peace for Russia and Ukraine.

Indeed, P20 does not specifically discuss the war between Russia and Ukraine. But we hope that Indonesia can facilitate peace between Russia and Ukraine," he said.

"We also hope that, as stated by the Chairperson of the DPR, the results of the P20 can establish a mutual agreement that can encourage concrete actions in responding to various global problems, including the handling after the COVID-19 pandemic," continued Gilang.

Through the G20 Presidency, Indonesia is said to have to reiterate leadership at the international level. Moreover, said Gilang, the DPR Building was built with an international vision since President Soekarno led Indonesia.

"The Senayan parliamentary complex was built because President Soekarno wanted to form Conefo, an international forum equivalent to the United Nations in New York," he said.

Therefore, strengthening the role and function of parliament for sustainable recovery is considered indispensable in the midst of various challenges of energy crises, food crises, and global financial crises. Parliament must be strong in terms of its functions and roles.

So far, the DPR RI has the functions of legislation, budgeting, and supervision. Through P20, the DPR RI will strengthen the function of parliamentary diplomacy," concluded Gilang.
