5 BEM UI Claims Against The Government For Increased Fuel Prices

JAKARTA - The Association of students from the University of Indonesia (UI) has demonstrated against the increase in fuel oil (BBM) in front of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Building, Central Jakarta, Tuesday, September 13.

Chairman of the UI Student Executive Board (BEM) Bayu Satria Utomo said the demonstration was held at around 13.00 WIB. According to Bayu, there are at least five BEM UI demands for the government in response to the increase in fuel prices.

"The UI Alliance Rejects the Increase in Materials expresses its attitude, first, rejecting the government's policy of increasing fuel prices because it has a significant impact on various sectors of people's crucial lives," said Bayu, Tuesday, September 13.

Furthermore, BEM UI demands that the government rely more on the use of the State Revenue and Expenditure Budget (APBN) to reduce the impact of the global energy crisis which has an impact on the community.

"For example, the budgeting of fuel subsidies rather than prioritizing various national strategic projects (PSN) with minimal urgency," he said.

The third demand, said Bayu, demands that the government resolve various structural problems on the distribution of subsidized fuels rather than implement a shortcut policy without careful calculations in the future.

"Fourth, urging the government to maintain price stability for various food commodities due to the increase in fuel prices so that they can still be reached by the community," he said.

Bayu stated that the fifth demand asked the government to distribute aid to the poor who were effectively affected by various structural improvements.

Previously, it was reported that a wave of demonstrations against the increase in fuel prices (BBM) continued in the Gambir area, Central Jakarta, Tuesday, September 13.

Today, mass elements from the Indonesian Trade Union Alliance Congress (KASBI) and a combination of students also voiced their rejection of the increase in fuel.

In addition to the mass of labor elements, mass groups from various student elements from Esa Unggul University also took to the streets. They walked from Sarinah to Jalan Medan Merdeka Barat or the Arjuna Wijaya Horse Statue area, Central Jakarta.
