Darwin Nunez Immediate Medical Test After Liverpool-Benfica Agree On Price
JAKARTA - Uruguayan striker Darwin Nunez immediately underwent a medical to complete his move to Liverpool from Benfica after the two teams were reported to have reached an agreement on a transfer price.
The Times columnist, Paul Joyce, on Sunday, July 12 reported that Liverpool and Benfica will finalize Nunez's base transfer price of £64 million.
The deal also includes an additional clause of £12.8 million related to Nunez's appearances and another clause of £8.5 million.
Overall - reported from Antara - the price tag will make Nunez break the record for the most expensive transfer Liverpool have ever made, surpassing Virgil van Dijk's £75 million purchase from Southampton in 2018.
Nunez missed Uruguay's friendly against Panama on Saturday, 11 June and is currently in Madrid, Spain. He is scheduled to undergo a medical to complete his move to Liverpool on Monday, 13 June.
The agreement is a positive outcome of a price negotiation process led by Liverpool Director of Football Julian Ward with Benfica President Rui Costa and Benfica Sporting Director Rui Pedro Braz.
Benfica initially asked Nunez for a base price of 80 million euros and an additional clause of 20 million euros but Ward was able to reduce it to 75 million euros (equivalent to 65 million pounds).
Nunez reportedly prefers to join Liverpool and play under Jurgen Klopp, although Manchester United are also reportedly very interested in using his services.
According to The Times, Nunez will sign a six-year contract at Liverpool.
Klopp and Van Dijk reportedly played a direct role in convincing Nunez to move to Anfield, including in a brief conversation during Liverpool's meeting with Benfica in last season's Champions League quarter-finals in which the 22-year-old always scored in both legs of the match.
Overall Nunez scored no less than 34 goals in 41 appearances for Benfica throughout the 2021-22 season. The news of the Nunez transfer agreement further paved the way for Sadio Mane to leave Liverpool for German giants Bayern Munich.
So far Liverpool have rejected two offers from Bayern and set Mane only to be released with a tag of £42.5 million (approximately Rp. 772.6 billion).
