In the event with the theme "The Role and Challenges of Religion in Responding to a Global Crisis", the Vice President explained that the ulama had formulated that the purpose of Islamic law was for the benefit of mankind, both in this world and in the hereafter.

The scholars set out the principles that bring benefit, namely maintaining religion, maintaining the safety of the soul, guarding reason, protecting offspring, and safeguarding property.

In fact, Ma'ruf added, there are two more principles included in the objectives of Islamic law that need to be added, namely maintaining security and peace and protecting the environment from the threat of global environmental damage.

"These two things are closely related to the development of the benefit of mankind globally," he said.

The vice president emphasized that Islam ahlusunnah wal jama'ah, which is embraced by Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), not only adheres to the principles of Islamic law, but also bases its thoughts on the principles of moderation, fairness, balance, and tolerance.

So, he said, it was believed to be able to provide solutions to various global problems and challenges faced by mankind today.

"Nahdlatul Ulama in various situations of a national nature often resolve national problems using religious solutions to become national solutions," said Ma'ruf.

The vice president gave an example, when there is a conflict between religious and national understanding, NU can compromise between the two problems very well and place each one more proportionally regarding religious and national harmony, so that there is no clash.

"Likewise, when there was a conflict regarding the legitimacy of the national leadership during President Soekarno. Between those who ratified and did not ratify, NU took the initiative to position President Soekarno as the legitimate President and position him as the legitimate power holder because he was supported by power, even in an emergency," he said.

Therefore, the Vice President expects the younger generation of NU, especially academics who are members of the Dutch PCINU, to continue to explore and explore the basics of NU's thinking as a religious solution to overcome the global crisis.
