Make No Mistake! Malnutrition Can Happen To Anyone, Including People With Thin Or Fat Bodies

JAKARTA - Dr. dr. Warsinggih, Sp.B-KBD, General Chair of IKBDI (Association of Indonesian Digestive Surgeons) said that malnutrition can happen to anyone, including people who are thin or fat.

Malnutrition is a condition in which a person lacks nutrients such as protein, carbohydrates, fats, minerals or micronutrients. It is caused by various factors including poor diet, digestive conditions and other ailments.

"Thinness and fat are the benchmarks from BMI and malnutrition is related to existing nutritional deficiencies," said dr. Warsinggih in the Fresenius Kabi webinar quoted from Antara, Tuesday, May 24.

More dr. Warsinggih explained, to find out the ideal body weight, it must be seen based on the standard body mass index (BMI). If the BMI is below 18, then it can be called thin, but if it is above 30 it means it is categorized as obese.

"So it must be distinguished between ideal and thin. But if you are thin and do not undergo surgery, it will not affect the action, if you are overweight it will have an impact," he said.

Meanwhile, Dr. dr. Nurhayat Usman, SpB-KBD, FINACS from IKBDI said it was important to routinely check BMI, especially if someone was going to have surgery.

"Fat is not necessarily healthy, this is what we must pay attention to, we must know with BMI that we must pay attention before taking action," said Nurhayat.

Everyone's daily nutritional needs are not the same, depending on their body weight. However, the three mandatory intakes that must be present in every meal are carbohydrates, fat and protein.

In addition, one can also add other nutrients through vitamin supplements.

"For example, if you weigh 70kg, you need 2,100 calories a day. That's what must be met from the main elements to meet your basic daily needs," explained dr. Nurhayat.
