Gundogan Rumored To Leave Man City, His New Wife Denies: Fake News!
JAKARTA - Ilkay Gundogan is not going anywhere. Reports that he is leaving Manchester City are just "fake news", his new wife says.
The Germany international is expected to leave the Etihad in the summer transfer window after six years at the club in which he has won three Premier League titles, four Carabao Cups and one FA Cup.
Arsenal have been considered a potential destination for Gundogan. The player is said to be reuniting with his former assistant coach at City, Mikel Arteta.
Gundogan's contract will expire in the summer of 2023. For this reason, City are expected to cash in on the midfielder rather than release him for free next year.
However, Gundogan's wife, Sara Benamira, denounced the report as "fake news" while announcing their marriage on social media.
"We're married. We're so happy... can't wait to celebrate with our family and friends. Gundos," he wrote.
The post was edited from an earlier version which read: "We are married. We are really happy...we wanted to keep it a secret but unfortunately after this fake news about my husband I feel compelled to tell the truth."
City are expected to sell several players this summer ahead of the arrival of Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund. A deal has been reached for the Norway international after he turned down interest from Real Madrid, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain.
Gabriel Jesus is expected to leave to make way for 21-year-old Haaland. And Arsenal are closest to reaching an agreement to sign the Brazilian.
Arteta insisted on signing a striker and the former Palmeiras talisman fulfills all the conditions at the Emirates.
Gundogan was touted as the next player to leave. But his wife's statement cast doubt on the news.
The German has been a huge success since joining from Dortmund in 2016, scoring 47 and providing 33 assists in 252 appearances across all competitions.
